Default assistance for the new guy?

HI all, first i need to tell you this car in question is not mine, just lending a helping hand to some one that cant afforad a mechanic. I dont know much about imports so i turn to you.

the person i am helping has a 98 elantra, it dies out while driving, fires right back up, she gets back on the street and it dies again and again and again. She tells me the car lunges like it out of gas before it dies.

I went and checked out the car tonight, could not find any thing (obvious) except a leaking vacumue line, not bad enough to cause the car to run fine and then die. unfortunatly i dont have a scanner to check the codes for the imports

where to begin?
BTW nice forum you have here, lots of great stuff

Thanks

Take it to Autozone for a free code scan, write down the codes. Tell them you have a "check engine" light. Don't let them diagnose the problem or sell you parts just yet. Report the codes back here.

If there is no codes, then it's possibly a fuel problem. Try changing the fuel filter.
