Headlights don't warn or turn off
I have a 1999 Hyundai Accent GSi, and I have a question that I could not find in my manual. I have already had to jump start my car several times because I keep leaving the headlights on. Easy solution, make sure I turn them off before I get out of the car, but for some reason my brain is not wired to remember, no matter how many stickies I leave myself, or where I leave them! I AM wondering, though, if my car is wired correctly. When I turn off the car and the headlights are on, the headlights go off, but the parking lights stay on. I don't know if they are supposed to automatically shut off, but they don't. Ever. Hence the jumpstarting. There is also no warning bell to tell me "Hey buddy, you're about to leave with your headlights on." The bell works fine, though, when I leave my keys in, or start my car without my seatbelt on! The previous owner installed an automatic starter, and I thought that screwed things up, so I was going to take it to and auto electronics place to see if they could fix it, but then I read a post online that said that Hyundai builds its cars with no headlight warning bell, and with no auto-shut-off mechanism. Or at least, they didn't used to. Thoughts? Any other '99 Accent owners have this issue?
After looking around the web, I found some solutions for people who had this problem with certain Hondas. They attached a RadioShack Buzzer to some of the fuses in their car. I had to do some experimenting; I found that the buzzer didn't work with any of the interior fuses, either it was on all the time, or off all the time. I ended up attaching one end of a wire to my right headlight fuse, and the other end to my right tail light fuse (both under the hood), ran the wire to the interior of the car, attached the buzzer, and superglued it somewhere inconspicuous. It works, and is loud as hell! In the past 2 months, I haven't had to jump my car once! The only problem is, I can never have just the parking lights on, or the buzzer goes off, but I would never do that, anyway. Just thought I would offer that as a solution if anyone else is having that problem. Oh, because this was confusing for me: you just wrap the wire over one prong of the fuse (I dont' think it matters, but I put them both on the side facing the front of my car), and jam it in there. As long as the wire isn't super-thick (I just used a double-wire from an old lamp), it should fit.
