im sure someone will have a more accurate number, but my method is simply put back in what you take out. start the car and put it in gear to get fluid moving. check with dipstick and top off to the cold marks (if car is cold). take it out for a drive and repeat for the hot marks as cold marks are simply not accurate - but they're good enough to not blow the trans from too little fluid.

on a second note, if you're doing this job yourself why not do the job right? drain/refill pan with a good cleaning of the pan. next disconnect the output cooler line from the trans into the lower part of the radiator (the trans cooler). stick that into a 2L pop bottle. get someone to put it in drive and remove ONLY 1L at a time. refill. repeat until fluid becomes clean.

also a safer/cleaner/easier method without the car on: use a drill pump to move the fluid at the same point until it becomes clean.

That method will not get the fluid out of the torque converter.

fair enough, thanks for the clarification. wasn't sure on that point.

so that means go back to the first shade tree mechanics method.

as a sight modification to the method to ease the flush, figure out which cooler line is intake to trans and which is the output of fluid. intake hose into a jug of fresh fluid, output line into drain pain. put trans in drive and let the trans pump away. just be sure to stop and switch jugs before the fresh stuff runs out is all.

really? my old car wouldn't...go figure. had to have my wife shift it into drive for me to get the fluid moving then back to park to stop the fluid flow.
