2002 Elantra Speed Sensor Problem? - P1529 P0501 P0500
My girlfriend has a 2002 Hyundai Elentra that recently failed the MA saftey inspection. From the OBD there were three error codes, p1529, p0501, and p0500. According to the obd-codes.com, two of the codes are as follows: "P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction
P0501 Vehicle Speed Sensor Range/Performance." AS for p1529, I've heard everything from "that's the code that tells the computer to turn the check engine light on" to "that's a code from the TCU telling the ECU to put the transmission into safe mode". Which one is it? Do I need to check the transmission computer as well? And clear those codes?
Does anyone know the location of the speed sensor? Has anyone replaced it before?

The code is related to the right front wheel speed sensor ... possibly a bad wheel speed sensor or broken wire or faulty connection ....you may look behind the fender shield to inspect for broken or damaged wire or connector .... a good starting point

Confounding to your query, Hyundai uses the term speed sensor to refer to a number of items. But from what I know, the sensor is located on the backing plate of the brake rotor.

yes correct, wheel speed sensor is located in Rf spindal area ... wheelspeed sensor wire routing and connector end, is located behind rf inner fender pannel ..... sorry for not specifying

VSS location and replacement
Indeed, you do find the VSS behind the brake mudguard front wheel passenger side. However, on a 2002 model it is not easily removeable and you will probably split the retainling bolt while removing it. Plus, once you've removed or split the bolt you will also have a difficult time pulling the VSS out of its slot without breaking it completely. What isn't clear to me yet: can the VSS be disconnected from the wire leading to the PCM and speedometer or, must the entire apparatus be replaced?
