Thumbs down 98 transmission problems!

I am new here and really need some help! When driving my 98 elantra(stick), I would shift into gears while driving and have to give it more gass because it would just rev and not really go anywhere. So I was trying to make it home after work( night shift in the middle of nowhere!) and the car just would rev without barely going anywere. So im driving maybe around 30-40 mph, the motor is revving high, and I hear a pop of some sort, and see sparks......... My car starts, but it sounds rough when idiling, and I am unable to even shift it into gear. A buddy of mine looked at it, and I can see a big metal piece gone off the bell housing. I only paid $1000 for the car, is it worth trying to fix? Do I have to get a whole new transmission? I am unable to find the bell housing anywhere, any help and suggestions is WELCOME!!!!!!!!!

THANK YOU!

Sounds like the clutch has been burned out. I'm guessing the bell housing cover on the bottom is missing, which means someone else must have been suspicious of or investigating the clutch before you purchased the car.

I can see a hole in the bell housing like something busted through it, when I'm looking down at it through the hood.....

Unless you are very mechanically minded, and can find a decent donor car in a salvage yard, I wouldn't spend a dime on fixing this problem.
