Default Catastrophic engine failure: powertrain warranty?

My older son drives a 2003 Hyundai Elantra with 57,000 miles on it. Yesterday he started it after lunch and was driving slowly through the parking lot when the engine suddenly quit and white smoke appeared from under the hood. Large quantities of oil on the ground. The oil dipstick was pushed up in the tube with such force that the handle was broken off. Proper maintenance has been performed and the car has not been abused.

We are arranging to have the car towed to the dealer. I am concerned about the warranty obviously. It has been more than 60 months since the car was first sold. My son bought it used from the dealer. Is there a chance that the 10/100,000 mile warranty will apply? Any educated guesses as to what went wrong?

Thanks for any help.

No, the 10y/100K mile warranty is only for the original owner. However, the second owner does get a 5y/60k mile warranty. Since it only has 57K miles, it should still be covered.

You said the car was purchased more than 60 months ago. I would still ask the dealer because an engine tanking like you described should be unheard of at 57K, but be prepared for them to say it is not covered by any warranty.
We are towing the car to the dealer where it was purchased used. They have promised a break if the engine has suffered a failure not related to abuse or lack of maintenance. The car has been properly maintained and my son drives like granny. We will see how this goes. I'll post the end result...

We have been promised a hearing from the Hyundai rep tomorrow.

BTW, the engine threw a rod, bustin' right out the side of the block. [sm=jawdrop.gif]

No respect, no responsibility, no explanation. Based on my experiences I cannot recommend either Hyundai (the car) or Hyundai (the company).[:@]

So it's Hyundai's fault that you purchases an abused used car?
