Default Charcoal Canister leaking gasoline.

Hi. I have a 2002 Elantra with about 80,000 miles. Late last night I filled my tank up with gas, then the next day gas was leaking from the charcoal canister. I know that the charcoal canister is only suppose to have fumes going through it. I'm just wondering how did it get overflown with gasoline. It was also a pretty hot day. I don't know if the temperature had to do anything with the gas or vapors to expand or anything. Maybe the heat exacerbated the problem? I would really appreciate any advice. Thanks.

You're not supposed to fill the tank all the way up to the top of the filler tube. If you do, it runs off and saturates the charcoal canister. Just fill it up till the hose shuts off.

Yep, stop overfilling your tank.

I always stop filling with the first stoppage of the pump. I never top off my tank.

Ok, well don't fill up your tank as much as you did then.
