Default Idle level/Tranny question

I have a 2001 Elantra GT Hatch with the 5 speed manual tranny and 55000 miles on it. I have two questions:

1)What should the car be idling at? Mine idles a little below 1000 RPM, I guesss it could be about 750. Is this normal?

2)If I shift into either first gear or reverse and I slowly ease off the clutch I can get the car to engage in the gear without ever giving it gas. Should I be able to do this? I drove manuals before and I was never able to do that. I can ease off the clutch and start going then just pop it into second gear. Normal or not?

Thanks a lot.
