Ignition module
Trying to figure out if a 2001 elentra has an ignition module or not, an if so where is it located. Can't find anything on it. Previously just replaced the ecu, an crank shaft sensor an car still will only turn over an will not start.
Hi Toby,
Before replacing anything, we try to eliminate required things one at a time.
As you know an engine has to have , fuel, spark at the right time, and air.
When we get a no start, many things can affect why they are not available.among which can be,
Immobilizer (security) sytem
Lack of required fuel, (fuel pump, controls that monitor fuel pump operation) correct info to vehicle computer to allow fuel to inject.
Lack of spark to ignite the fuel in the cyl --Crank sensor, cam sensor, security system info missing, ign, syst. components.
Even experienced techs need to verify the certain conditions are met for the engine to start and run.
There is not very much a novice can do with today's vehicles since some special tools are now required , ie. capable scan tool.

So I know that this 01 elentra doesn't have a immobilizer or any security system in it. So why I'm thinking ignition module. Or ignition took a crap. Why I am trying to figure out if this car has a ignition module. I've never messed with anything that has coil packs. Honestly have only worked on toyotas before. I need this car up an running. Any help would be appreciated an Thankyou.
Let's go, Toby,
You check for spark on Toyotas as well as Hyundais. DO you have spark , yes-/ no ?
If you remove one spark plug , you should see whether you are getting fuel or not.
.If wet, then you are getting fuel just no spark to ignite it ,,---yes/no ?
If yes to both , it should start. Which is missing?

The crank sensor is the first item in the chain of creating spark. That info goes to the ign module then to the PCM then to the coil(s) to fire and without an RPM signal the fuel pump usually will not stay running.. It does get energized for 2-3 seconds when the key is first turned on and if no RPM signal is rec'd shuts down.
I get very uncomfortable when folks start switching .ECM's because some will require programming to each particular vehicle.without which > no start.

Please, stop throwing parts at the problem.
We need to tackle one problem at a time. If,,,,,,,,,,,,,,we have no spark, let's find out why and correct that part of the problem.
We need to know if the crank sensor is sending any signal to the ign module. If you don't have any kind of test equip, just give the $$$ to someone that can run some tests because you will keep replacing parts and maybe create more problems than you solve.
My next question is where are you getting your parts?
A lot of parts ,these days, are defective right out of the box and if you have no way to verify it is working , now another possible problem has been added to the original problem. You have worked on vehicles before and I'm sue you are aware of this.
We need to know for sure if you are getting spark.
Then we need to know if fuel is getting into the engine and that is why I suggested to look at one of the spark plugs and get some kind of answer.
I have no idea where we stand with these two conditions and cannot go any further until we get the answers.
