Hi all, I'm glad there is a forum for this little car. My wife was driving home and the tranny went boom, and her Over Drive and reverse gear went out!? We had the thing in a few years ago to a tranny shop and they said there was a problem at the time with a sensor, but they did a fluid and filter change and flush and the check engine went off for about 2 years. Well this happened and I'm trying to decide what to d at this point! any help would be greatly accepted!

 

If it were my car I'd be dropping the transmission pan to see if there is metal shavings in it. If there is, then the problem is serious, and probably a used trans is the cheapest option.

Where do you live, I can try to find a used trans for you. You might get a good used trans for $400, and installed for $500. So total might be under $1000.

Mind you, a 98 Elantra is probably only worth $2000 max, so it might be new car time considering the condition of the rest of the car.
