Default 2008 i30 outside temperature display

Hi! I'm curious to know if anyone could help me find some aftermarket car radio which is able to show
the outside temperature. As you know the sensor sends the signal through first din to the radio. Problem
is that car's previous owner has changed new radio/cd which is 1din without display. I'm looking for a
new 2din bt/usb/(cd) radio with display which understands the outside temp. signal. and shows it.

Starting with model year 2008 most vehicles incorporated what is called a CAN (Controller Area Network) system.

The system utilizes a series of modules to control various functions. If any one of the modules has a problem or doesn't work correctly, there can be a system communication problem and the system produces problems. The radio in many of these systems is one of the modules in the network. If it has been removed for whatever reason, there can be a problem with the network.. Suggest you have a competent shop or dealership check your vehicle .

Thank you for your reply. Either I didn't type my problem clearly or you didn't read my question properly. The CAN works fine to my knowledge.
The problem is that I do not have any sort of display which shows the outside temperature. I need a new 2din bt/usb/(cd) radio with display that
shows the temperature which comes from the CAN to the din number 1. So if anyone has experience with modern car radios, I'd like to hear from
you what manufacturer has a radio model to my needs.
Thank you all

Hi!

External temperature has nothing to do with CAN. The temperature sensor is a thermistor mounted by the horn, and is connected to the back of the stereo. The stereo reads the resistance and expresses it as a temperature on screen. I don't think the stereo reports that to CAN, I've never seen a PID for it.

To your question - a stereo which has this feature that isn't the Hyundai OEM one? I don't know, I doubt it. I'm sort of in the same boat right now too, I want to upgrade audio but I'd like to keep that external temp indicator (here in Canada it gets cold)!

let us know if you find anything, I'll do the same.

If you remove one of the modules in the network , the network does not work properly. My point is,, the radio is one of the modules and if if is not reporting , the network has a problem. Suggest you check with your dealership service dept to obtain a satisfactory answer.

The radio isn't a CAN module though: the audio unit on the 2008 i30 isn't a CAN connected device at all. You can't connect to it, it doesn't produce codes, and it won't ever show up on a scan because it's not on the network.

Go to a dealer if you want, but I'm looking at the dealer wiring diagram right now (no CAN lines):

You can tear it out and throw it on the grass and it won't affect CAN in the least. Actually you can do that with most CAN modules, they connect in a star and removing one shouldn't affect the others.

One thing you can see on the wiring diagram is how the temperature sensor hangs together with the thermistor. Hyundai must have had that arrangement specially made into the head unit for this model, which is a bit of a pain.

That is simple enough to verify.
A good scan tool will do a module health check and if the radio is not involved it will not show anything.

I don't have to verify it, been there done that with a dealer level diag scanner. Looked at every PID the car has to offer to program in a custom ODB gauge cluster: ambient temp isn't one of the data points, sadly.

The wiring simply isn't there, and was never designed to be. I'm not too sure this thread is really helping the OP much, but at least he/she can now rule out CAN for any help with the problem.

Do you remember how many modules it had and which they were?
Would like to see a wiring diagram with the PCM for that year if you can get us one, thanks.

Yeah I can go and do a scan later today with my Foxwell NT and I'll post up. It's -9'c out just now so I'll wait till it's a little warmer

Here's the wiring diagram I have attached, I hope it helps! I've found as I work through the car that it's VERY accurate. The diagrams I have for some of the other cars I work on (Jags mostly) are more like a guide than a diagram, lots of variations and inaccuracy, but this one for Hyundai seems a lot more on point.
