Fuel cap Cover - does it pop open?
If it's popping open 1/2" then it's working normally. It isn't designed to open all the way.
The people with a problem have doors that don't move at all (or very little). The can't grip the edge with their fingers and need to use something like the key to stick in the slot and pry it open.

I took my 2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring to the dealer because the gas cap door cover was sticking and would not pop open. The mechanic opened it and pulled up on it a little. He said they frequently get off track and need a little adjustment to get back in the groove.
This was NOT the real problem. There is a "V" shape spring attached to the arm of the door. It is behind the arm, you cannot see it, and you can only reach it if you take off the gas cap. If you can bend the spring out with your finger, the door will pop open properly.
Here is the recall notice that shows where the spring is located.

My ET 2009 gas door also stuck. Had the dealer look at it when I had it in for another warranty repair. They fixed it, but first time at the gas station it stuck again.
Next time it was in for another issue, I had them look at it again. This time they said that they needed to replace the entire gas door. It took them a week to get the part, and another to paint it (the doors come in one color). During that time I was able to drive a nice loaner Santa Fe
After I got the car back it has worked great ever since.

I had my ET in to the dealer this past week for its 7500 mile check-up. The service dept guy told me there were two "campaigns" issued for my model (a 2010). One was something to reinforce the struts, and the other was a fix for the fuel door. Finally, my fuel door pops open as it should. All done under warranty, of course. You all might want to ask your service dept rep about these campaigns.
PS--I think the word, campaign, here is too funny. Sure sounds better than TSB or recall.

HEHEHEHEEEE..... Use your finger to bend the "V" shaped door spring so it pops the door a bit more open.. already been done to Sonata in past, common knowledge.
They come out with a cheezie recall to stick a piece of dense foam on the "V" spring to provide a bit more rebound when door released with Elantra Tour and their premier EQUUS.. cant wait to see how long it last, till weather gets to the foam and kills it..
