Default key replacement for 2009 Elantra Toruing

What is the deal on a key replacement for 2009 Elantra Touring?

What is it likely to cost me going through the dealer and can it be done cheaper somewhere else?

I'm pretty sure you have to go through the dealer. I asked what the amount was - don't remember the exact amount, but I do remember it was under $20. Won't take long to get either from what he said - but I haven't ordered one yet to know for sure.

I just wanted a door key so that i could take with me kayaking and underwater when doing scuba. I paid $15 for each key and avoided the $50 programming fee.

Let us know how it works out. I had a hard time with the parts department since they wanted me to get 2 keys minimum and programmed for almost $120 and a weeks wait. I grabbed my sales guy and he sorted it out. I had 2 door keys the next morning.

Customer is always right!

I do not understand the programming just for the key.
I had the local Key Smith make me a extra key for my 2009 and it did not have any programming or chip. The extra key works fine.

My buddy turned on my car by mistake with the spare key. I had not tried it. On my previous car(Chrysler) the "door" key without programming would turn on the car and then it would shut off after 5 seconds. The manual said too many attempts would lock out the system and it would need to be towed to the dealer.

Are you driving around with that key?

I just keep one spare in my wetsuit and another hidden under the car.

Well I drove all day today with the replacement key. The car ran fine.
The only difference on my 2009 is that I have remote start from the original key remote. Not sure if that makes any difference.
The key cost me $25 and it works.

Default Elantra Touring Key replacement cost

Thanks for the repasonses. Looks like I am getting shafted on these keys. Dealer is telling me it is $130 for the key and $137 for the Remote entry unit.

and I'm still waiting (2weeks....)!

Yes, that seems to be the standard response. I was willing to pay the $130 for a spare key but I wasn't happy about it so I grabbed my sales guy to sort it out. They made a few calls and I had dumb door keys the next day for $15.

Of course it turns out that these keys actually do start the car but I haven't tried driving it. Since the key goes with me in Salt water and then I rinse it better to not mess with it. I think replacing the door lock will be much cheaper

I lost my spare keys already and the parts Dept claims it was a mistake last time giving me 2 keys for $30. Now they want $130 for three. Crazy stuff since the same person that helped me last time was there. I think their attitude got worse then last time. Maybe they did get in trouble. Oh well. Time to find another parts dept or a local locksmith.
