2012 Diesel, broken timing chain -> new motor?
I have a 2012 Santa Fe, 2.2L diesel with a broken timing chain. Two mechanics have told me I need to replace the engine and to expect to pay roughly $4000 for parts and $4000 labour (for a second-hand engine of unknown quality.) They gave these prices without looking at the car.
I know a broken timing chain can cause lots of damage, but I am surprised the two mechanics were so quick to say 'new engine' without investigating at all. I'd expect them to suggest pulling the head off to inspect the damage before deciding what's needed.
How much damage is a broken timing chain likely to have caused? How likely is it that a new engine is needed? What are the chances it could be repaired cheaper than the price for a new one? (If it is $8k it may not be worth repairing.)
Any suggestions where/how to source a reasonably priced, second-hand engine in Australia?

Depending on the age and condition of your vehicle and the maintenance care it has received,
The people suggesting what to consider doing have a better idea of what may work best.
Normally, if everything is in good shape , the engine can be repaired.
Many times a salvage yard may have a similar vehicle engine sitting in a vehicle that might have been totaled for other reasons.
Before jumping the gun, those questions should be considered before making a hasty decision.
