I'm looking to buy a 2020 Santa Fe and can't make up my mind with the engine choice. I'll probably be opting for the AWD as I'm interested in some light off-roading. How much did you actually pay for your Santa Fe SEL 2.4 or 2.0t? What do you think of the engine performance? What's the passing power like on high way?

We love our 2.4 and find the power completely adequate. We drove both engines to make sure, and to me, the 2.0 sounded rough and much noisier than the 2.4, which surprised me. The 2.4 revs vey willingly, easily kicks down a gear or two for passing, and the mpg has been fantastic — especially compared to all of those who complain about the mpg of the 2.0.

 

I totally agree with your overall assessment of the 2.4 engine after 11 months, I could not be happier with mine overall. Another plus is that I have no problem averaging over 30mpg on the HWY. {32 to 34} The 2.4 is smooth and quiet in and out of town.

 

The majority of the time I am happy with the 2.4, the only time I'm a bit disappointed is when traveling on the freeway when there is a headwind. This last weekend I had the cruise set at 79 mph going into a headwind, and every small rolling hill the transmission would downshift. Very annoying.

Just keep one thing in mind, if you plan on trading after 2 or 3 years you will take a big lo$$ !

 

I think that Hyundai and Kia have both improved a great deal on the depreciation front in the last couple of years. Being at the top of the J.D. Power rankings for the last few years has certainly helped. One way to look at it is this: to buy a competing SUV with all of the features and options the Santa Fe has is going to cost you many more thousands of dollars when new.....and yes, it MAY be worth a little more than the Hyundai in one to three years, but I’ll bet the difference between purchase price on both and residual value is going to favor the Hyundai!

 

A $7,000 loss in value is pretty steep for a 2019 SEL with 8k miles. Hyundai dealer just offered me that on trade for a Ionic.
He said that's book value.

 

Yes it is.....but my point is this........how much would you lose on a 2019 Ford Explorer with 8K miles that you paid nearly 50K for with all of the options the SF comes with for only 38K? I’ll bet it would be a LOT more than $7,000.....probably close to twice that!

OK, not quite twice, but for an over $50K vehicle like this one, to be worth only $38,000 less than one year later still makes my point that you are going to lose a LOT more on a different vehicle than a Hyundai:https://www.kbb.com/ford/explorer/20...8712817%7Ctrue
