Check engine light/fuel gauge funky
Today my check engine light came on. I did some searching on here and something that popped up was regarding the fuel sender doo dad in the gas tank? I've noticed the past few times I've gotten gas the empty light has been on yet I can only fit in 12 or so gallons of gas. Today my light came on and I checked my odometer which I reset with each fill up and it said I had only gone 186 miles on the tank and that I had 65 miles left, I usually get right around 300 miles per tank. So it seems the gauge isn't working correctly. Does this sound like a classic fuel sender problem? My Santa Fe is a 2009 so it's out of warranty for this stuff. My husband will have to do it himself.
Should we take it to an auto zone or something and have them see what code comes up and if so, what am I looking for? If it is this problem and we do the repair ourselves, how do you get the check engine light to shut off? Also, you'll see further on down in the threads I posted a couple weeks ago about my shiftronic numbers in the dashboard didn't show up when I was "manually" shifting one night, but that only happened once and now they're fine. Is there something else going on here? We're planning on trading late spring so I'm praying there's nothing big time to repair. THanks for you help....

Was hoping I would have had a reply by now but understand that by searching I can get most of my answers. When I started the car today, the gas gauge was where it was supposed to be but the check engine light was still on. By the time I got to work (20 miles) the gauge was back on empty with the light on (I know there's a little less than a 1/4). Does this sound like classic fuel sender problems? I really don't want to put all the money into the parts and have it not be that. I certainly can't afford to have the dealership do it (I've heard $800 at least). And, I know my husband really doesn't want to tackle it if he doesn't have to ha ha. If we do this repair, will the check engine light go out itself?
Haven't had a chance yet, hoping to be able to stop on Friday. I'm fairly certain it's the problem but want to have it scanned to be safe. Then we'll order the parts. I got gas on Monday, have driven 80 miles and it's already on 1/2 tank, darn thing. I have to be vigilant using my trip odometer. Luckily the weather is getting warmer so hubby should be able to do it as soon as the parts come. Actually with all the reading I've been doing I think I could probably do it better than him!
Already ordered and shipped!
Got a little nervous today, sitting at a stoplight and the car felt like it was going to stall, (full tank) once I got going it was fine, hoping it's all the same thing. Don't need to throw a bunch of money into this when we plan on trading in like 2 months.
