Default '06 GLS -- Trunk Only Opens with Key/Button Combo

'06 GLS
141k miles

Prior to the date of this post, there were zero issues with opening the trunk. Now, however, the lid will not open when...
  • the driver's door truck release is pulled (solenoid is heard);
  • when the remote button is pushed (solenoid is heard);
  • the key is turned within the trunk lock.
Two things do open the trunk: Emergency Release within the trunk, and doing the "turn-trunk-key-in-lock-then-press-remote-button" trick, a fact that which confounds me.

Anyone have experience t'shooting this problem?

Evidently, the mechanical portion of the release is working..
The problem , it seems, the solenoid is not being pulled far enough to release the lock.
This may very well be caused by insufficient power getting to the solenoid.
Can you check ,with the lid open, if the solenoid is going it's full travel?
If there was a poor connection in the wiring to the solenoid, it would prevent the solenoid from having the strength to fully unlock the latch.
Without a meter to verify the full voltage getting to the solenoid when activated, all you could do is look for a plug in connection and separate it and reconnect it a few times and see if anything changes.

Just to re-emphasize... turning the key in the trunk lock and then pressing the lock button on the remote (as demonstrated in the video) actuates the solenoid sufficiently to release the latch. Doesn't this suggest that the solenoid operates normally?

It only indicates that it is operating or attempting to operate. It has to be strong enough to pull against the latch.
