Default 2006 sonata gls lx decceleration/drive by wire?

My father in law's 2006 gls lx sonata with 20K (auto) drives down the road and then all of a sudden the engine deccelerates and when he presses the gas pedal, the engine doesn't respond, and ultimately stops. After sitting for a few minutes, he starts the car back up and continues on his journey. This happens 4 or 5 times during a 25 mile commute? He took it in and they cannot find a problem.

1. does the drive by wire system register faults in the computer?
2. Are there any components that are infamous for over heating?
3. Is a position sensor/speed sensor prone to failure?

Just a few thoughts from what I have read on the board. Any/all suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Tim
