Default Blue smoke when accelerate! new engine?

Hello,
Driving down the highway yesterday and a HUGE plum of blue smoke came out when I punched the gas.
No loss of power, no sputter, no engine light. Everything thing else seemed fine.
I get to a light and when I start to advance, my oil light flickers then disappears.
I know enough to know that the seals likely need to be changed (I think)
I take it to the mechanic (it was there for 20 minutes) and he tells me I need a new engine. He says that there was little to no oil and that there was sludge on the cap.
I ask how he justified saying it needed a new engine and his response was, "it would be cheaper to put in a new engine then take the engine apart to clean it".
He didn't drop the oil pan or do a compression test. The Check Engine light has never come on. 2013 Hyundai Sonata GLS 170 000 kms in the engine.
Thoughts?
