The ESC is the elctronic stability control. It will automatically start working if you hit ice, or turn a corner too quickly, etc. What it does is help you to control your vehicle if you seem to be losing control. You can turn it off if you don't want it to come on. Mine came on when I started to hydroplane and I could actually feel it adjust my wheel a little bit.

There are two times that most people would consider turning ESC off.

1. You are stuck in snow - Having ESC on while the wheels are spinningand trying toescape is kind of counter productive.

2. You are stuck in mud - Same thing, ESC senses the vehicle is not "under control" as you try to escape and will make adjustments that will basically keep you stuck.

Perhaps Sand or otherwise loose material you are stuck in would also fall into these categories.

Otherwise probably best to keep it on.
