tiburon trans
have a 98 hyndai tiburon that has problems with the trans the problem is when u go from r n or p to drive it takes up to a minute to engage the trans is not slipping at all and it works fine if u leave it in drive such as pulling up to a stop sign if anyone has a clue as to whats wrong your input would be appreciated
yea i checked the fluid it did not smell burnt and was pretty red still i did not flush it but u would think if it was plugged it would be slipping as well unless the valve bodys are really dirty maybe try some trans saver?
Oh, yeah. Using standard trans fluid is bad. I think it's more a problem with being bad for the seals, although it's possible the valve bodies are sticky from some gunk. I wouldn't do the tranny doctor stuff, I'd do a proper flush and replace with correct fluid.
Actually, replacing the VSS doesn't require adding any new fluid. But you should still at least have it flushed, probably take the pan off and change the filter. You might find some metal in the pan. I'd hold off on the replacement just yet, it's not the easiest job. The sensors can be changed pretty easy, but they are expensive.
Are you sure it's got enough fluid? Like drive around in forward and reverse and then check it in neutral? The fluid is a Hyundai spec, not easy to find. I just go to the dealer for that.

Not to dig an old thread up, but possibly when they did a flush of the tranny, maybe the old tranny fluid was the only thing keeping it running well. I've seen some motors, held together with nothing more then engine sludge. If you did an oil change that motor would fall apart. Maybe the tranny liked having it's ****ty fluid in it?
