Default Blower motor only operates on high

The lower settings on the fan speed **** don't work at all. The fan will only operate on the highest setting.

What could be the problem? Relay? Control unit?

Anyone else have experience with this problem?

Thanks in advance for any info.

The ballast resistor on the blower motor is burned out and needs to be replaced.

Thanks, Ken. Is the ballast resistor a readily available part? Do I get that at the dealer, Advance or like Radio Shack? How accessible is it to get to?

Much appreciated!

Readily available from the dealership and I think most auto parts stores like NAPA, Autozone, O'Rielly, etc.

How accessible is it to get to?
Replacing the resistor is the easy part, but the blower usually has to be removed from the vehicle to get at it. Instructions for removing the blower can be found at http://www.hmaservice.com. You didn't say what year and trim of Tucson you own.

Dealer should have 1 on shelf if they any good... we usually keep them in stock..

Do not need to remove blower motor, resistor is usually mounted on bottom of box between fan and evaporator.. pull it out and look at it.. usually you will find 1 of the foil strips burned off the main body, or the main body all disfigured (burnt up)

If Hyundai not have it, get part number and call local Kia dealer (Tucson = Sportage)

How old and how many miles are on your Tucson? If it's under 5 years and 60k miles it will be covered under warranty.

These diagrams might help:

Measure terminal-to-terminal resistance of the blower resistor.
If measured resistance is not within specification, the blower resistor must be replaced. (After removing the resistor)

FIXED!!!. I'll post some pics when I get home, pretty much just pulled the resistor "pack" out and took a look. It was a PITA to get out due to the lip on part #8, which I'm not sure why it's there. I would suggest using a smaller stubby screw driver. The copper lead to terminal 4 was pulled all the way the off. I soldered it back on and checked my resistance numbers, which were on, and touched up the other solder joints. It was a pretty poor solder job by the original assembler. At my last job, as an electronics assembler/tech, I would of been embarrassed to let this one out of the factory. Either way, easy fix. Thanks to everyone for the help.

I'm glad to hear I should be able to reach it without removing the blower motor. I'm going to check it out this weekend.

Any pics you can post would be great. Hope it's an easy fix.

/Jim
