Hi all...I have an '04 XG350 and the washer fluid pump stopped working. What is the best way to get to the old one out and the new one in?

Are you sure it's blown and the problem isn't just a frozen line?

 

Um...ok...

Yeah, the pump is dead. Lines are clear...the wipers work as they should...I could not find a separate fuse/relay for the washer pump, just the relay for the wipers.

So, what I am asking here is....how do I get to the pump to change it? The reservoir
looks to be buried under and behind the passenger side headlight housing.

The wiper and washer should be on the same relay. Again I'll ask, how do you know the lines are clear? I'm assuming its fairly cold in the Chicago Burbs. What did you do to check the lines are clear? And are you sure the fluid at the bottom of the reservoir isn't frozen and blocking the pump.

The pump is located in the bottom of the washer reservoir so you have to access it from under the car.

 

The car is kept in a heated garage plus the fluid is supposed to be good to -20 deg. I am assuming if the line was clogged, you'd hear the pump trying to force the fluid through the lines...dead silence.

Since it's the alcohol in the fluid that prevents the freezing, that's generally for when the fluid is in the container itself, not at the squirters. Many times, the alcohol in the fluid at the squirters evaporates leaving just water that freezes. Or, rain/snow freezes in the squirter nozzles, blocking them. However, since you said the car is kept in a heater garage, I'd suspect that is not the problem. So, yes, time to remove the tank and pump. Not a simple job.

 

Washer pump sits on right side of tank. With flexible arms it can be reached from the top after right headlamp removed. If that's not enough, partially remove wheel liner plastic. Removing tank isn't necessary.
B.t.w. washer pump is operated directly by stalk. No relay.
