Just wondering how intense is it to R&R the timing belt? I am coming close to 60,000 miles and not super rich to pay someone. I have mechanical background working on freightliners, Detroit diesels and Mercedes. I have replaced belts on ford ranger's 2.3 engines. Also since the water pump is located there too, what is the real need to re[place that too? It a 2002 xg350 3.5 v6.

Second question is does the tranny have a servicable filter? Or is it a screen/in case filter replaced only if tranny is removed and overhauled.

 

If you've already done a timing belt, then you know what's involved. It's harder in an XG because you don't get much space to work in, but it's basically the same. Make sure the sprockets are lined up right, and the belt is the right tension, etc. Replace the water pump at your own option. Personally I don't because I want to save money. I'll replace it when it starts to leak. The pullies too. Why don't you get a kit from eBay?

As far as the trans filter, note that cars produced before 08 2001 have a spin on type external filter, while those produced after have a standard wafer type. They have this filter at Autozone.

I am the same way, about saving cash. I will find out when I replace the belt. I was told the tensioner is hydraulic type. What is that? Finally is tran filter serviceable like any other type of tranny? I notice the pan is on the side, and there is a drain plug on the bottom of the transmission. I like this car, paid for and still a very strong car only 57000 miles on a 7 year old car. What other things should I watch for? I know every car model has pluses and negitives items to watch for.

 

Who told you the tensioner is hydraulic? Not sure what that is. Certainly the one shown is not hydraulic, it's a "push it hard and tighten it down" one. I couldn't find a diagram of the trans, so I can't answer your question there. I never changed a six cylinder Hyundai, so I can't tell you what to look out for.

Expensive but it is complete and has hyundai parts were needed.

 

Wow! Interesting about the hydraulic tensioner. Yes, that kit is REALLY expensive. If it were my car, I'd just buy the belt and slap it on there, but that's just my Scottish coming out.

 

I am the same way like to spent the least amount of $$$$ but I know my luck too. After a month or so the water pump would start leaking and have to do it all over again. The cooling system was flushed at 35,000 as was the brake and power steering.
