1997 Accent gear box help
Hi,
I'm another newbie. I hope that someone can help me. I have a 1997 Accent 1.3Si (UK). Am having gearbox trouble. It started with tight selection of gears - particularly 2nd & 4th. Had to drive 3miles home stuck in 2nd gear. With help off my wife, she wiggled the gear stick & selected gears (without engine running). Found them stiff to select. I stuck my head under the bonnet, looking for trouble. Could not see anything broken. Suddenly the gear stick became loose. (inside the car) . The selector rods mounted on top of the gerabox did not move. If I pushed the rods toward the bulkhead my wife could select gears. But it would then stick in that gear. Does any one have a clue what it wrong?
No stupid replies please!!

RE: 1997 Accent gear box help
Thanks. Would they do anything about it as it is a 1997?
I've just been looking on this site under the link to TSB's & recalls. This TSB is not listed - I looked at 1995 - 1998 models.?? Can't find it using search engine.

RE: 1997 Accent gear box help
Hi all, just to let you know that it was the cables that operate the gear changes. These cables are sold & renewed in pairs. Staright forward to fit but fiddly. Cost £60.00 from U.K. dealer. took me about 4 hrs to fit once I knew what to do. Dealer was helpful at pointing me in the right direction.
If any one want help to change them let me know & I'll try to help.
Cheers

RE: 1997 Accent gear box help
My problem was the cable that runs from the gearstick to gearbox had snapped. Fairly inexpensive - £60.00 from U.K. dealer.
They come as a pair. There is a bracket bolted to the firewall accessable from the inside of the car. You need to remove tunnel tray from around handbrake & gearstick. The cables are attached to the gearbox by split pin. It is awkward & fiddley to take the cables out. I'm not an expert, but it took me 3-4hrs to change them. They should be factory set (so the dealer told me). I've hade no problems since, althogh I have now parted with the car.
Hope this helps.
