EGR valve oiling up - 2011 Santa Fe CRDI
I am the generally happy new owner of a 2011 Santa Fe 2.2 diesel. Not long after buying it the car went into limp mode with the check engine light coming on. The error code was related to egr system flow issues. I removed the egr valve and cleaned it up as best I could. It was seriously bunked up with heavy greasy carbon deposits. The car ran better for a couple of weeks but the car would still go into limp mode occasionally. Turning it off for a couple of minutes cleared the issue for a few more trips then the problem returned. I replaced the egr valve ( a 10 minute task in this model) and the car ran well for a week then the problem occurred again on inspection the egr valve was covered with greasy carbon deposits. I cleaned it and so far (3days)the problem has not recurred. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
You didn't say how many miles are on the engine..
If oil is getting into the exhaust, it could be an internal engine problem.
Don't want to alarm you , but could this be why the person sold the vehicle?
A good shop will need to do some checking to determine why the exhaust is getting so much oil.

Thanks for your reply.
Only 187000kms, not using any oil over the last 2000 kms so not sure what is going on. Do these motors have a PCV that needs checking. Could be an issue with valve guides or rings but no obvious signs of any issues. Going ok at the moment, no limp mode episodes but will book it into local diesel specialist for a full check out. Not willing to go to dealers as overall service quality reputation is not good.
