Can't physically shift?

Can't physically shift?
Not a mechanic. Obviously.
2003 Hyundai Accent. Manual, 1.6L.
I cannot physically shift at all. I can find some of the gears, but I cannot move into reverse or any other gear smoothly. So, my car is sitting in the driveway. I am a broke college student.
I have had troubles with the car throwing me out of fifth gear at higher speeds, but nothing too severe. It was occasional. The more it went on, the more frequent it got, and now I cannot go anywhere.
Is this the linkage? What's a good (CHEAP) way to get this checked out? It seems strictly mechanical, and not involving the transmission. However, like I said, I am not a mechanic.
Any help appreciated.
