making spare keys

making spare keys
I have an 2002 L. Can I go down to any old hardware store and have a spare key made for a couple of bucks, or do I have to go to the dealer and pay an insane amount of money for one?
I went to my neighborhood hardware store today, and the guy who was working there, refused to make/copy me one. He said the key had a transponder in it, and any key he made would not work in the car. I insisted my little ol' zero frills Accent had no transponder in the key.
If it makes any difference, my car has no remote entry, no power locks, no power windows, no alarm, no power/automatic anything, etc.
Who is right?
Thanks!

RE: making spare keys
There is no transponder. You are correct.
Why did you make 2 threads about the same question?

RE: making spare keys
Yeah what's up with that? i stopped at a small hardware store to get a copy and they said the same thing. My accent is about one step up from a go-cart, there's no way there was a chip in the key, but whatever. Should i lose or break my only copy, i'll probably just pop the ignition and rig up a toggle switch anyway.
