Default roadtrip with 08 accent

Just had a roadtrip from windsor ontario to vancouver bc passing thru the states last week. The total distance is above 4000km and took me 4 days to complete. The average gas-mileage ratio was about 1liter per 15-16km, sometimes a little bit more and the current mileages of the vehicle is 39100km.

That works out to 35 mpg, which is not very good. I get better than that in my 1999 Elantra. However, your breakin period is not over, and I suspect you'll get better mileage later.

Actually, 1L per 15-16km is actually closer to 37 mpg.

EPA Mileage estimates for the 2008 Accent (manual) is 27 mpg / 32 mpg / 29 mpg (city / highway / combined).

How can you say getting 35 mpg (3 mpg OVER the EPA highway estimate) is "not very good"? Especially when the real mpg is 37 (5 mpg OVER the EPA highway estimate).

Klee519, don't listen. You did good. Best of luck with your Accent.

Yes, you're right, it's more than 37 mpg.

Default Break-In Period

Is anyone else reading these messages? klee519's note shows he is getting 37+MPG (metric conversion to english). That is GREAT! He has 24300 miles on his car. A reply by jsinton claims klee519 will get even better fuel economy when the can is sufficiently broken-in. I hope we are talking about break-in and not worn-out. While I'm not sure where jsinton is getting his break-in data from, he may be the only one who believes in it.

OEM generally begin their new vehicle performance testing process, including fuel economy, at 2100 miles. As a point of reference, my '05 Corolla registered 38 MPG highway when it had 2300 miles on the odo. The odo now shows 45,250 miles. Last week we took it on a 300 mile trip (wife did not want to get her new Elanta Touring dirty) and it recorded 38 MPG.

My car was broken-in at 2300 miles and has not regestered any improved mileage since. I may stand corrected if you want to count a third or fouth decimal place variance.

Sorry, I'm still not impressed. I get 35-40 mpg on my beat up '99 Elantra depending on if I wanna go 70 or 90. I usually drive 1000 miles from Florida to Maryland in one shot. My old Honda Civic used to get 40 to 45 mpg, and it was VERY used up with low compression and in excess of 200,000 miles. A car like an Accent with a modern engine I would expect at least 40 mpg.

Maybe you guys are a bunch of lead foots or something. Or maybe it's all about altitude or mountains....

Welcome to physics 101. Weight affects mileage. Both your Civic and 99 Elantra weight less than a new Accent. Modern engines are more fuel efficient, but they also have to lug around more weight.

my accent is manual, and I had my bicycle, computer, laptop, TV, boxes this and that etc...loaded into the car. I was driving average 110km/h, approx 70mph. The pavement of the u.s highway is much better than canada, and it gave the tires with lower friction and less bumps.
The only thing that upset me was the stones and rocks damaged some paint jobs on my hood.
