Default transmission dipstick reading

I have a 2004 Accent GL with 176,000 miles. I'm having trouble reading the transmission level on the dipstick. The car is warmed up on a level surface with the gear in neutral. When I pull the dipstick, wipe, reinsert then pull the dipstick again the fluid is all over the dipstick with spaces between the fluid. It's hard to get a defined line. Also when performing a drain and refill, how many quarts should I put in? I normally put 2-3 quarts but it's hard to tell with the weird reading on the dipstick. Thank you for your time!

Well, if at first I can not read the dipstick cause of fluid all over
Then I try again. And try to remember that it should be a continuous flow from the bottom to the higher point.
If it is not continuous then it is probably just splatter in the tube.

Drain and fill .... should measure how much you got out
Then put in the same amount
Can do this by having an empty bottle
Oil bottle that has marks on it to tell how much fluid is inside would help

Thanks for the quick reply! It makes sense to use the continuous flow to determine the fluid level. I wasn't sure if anyone else had this problem.
