2005 elantra idle surge

I'd check the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve first, then possibly the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor).

I'm hearing so much that this could be the fuel pump. Would that make it rev to 3 grand at a stoplight.
For a non-mechanic person, would it be worth it to research and troubleshoot myself? Or should I have my mechanic take a look?

I agree with NovaResource's diagnosis, but I suggest you check for a vacuum leak first.
NR forgot to suggest that a code scanner be used to pull any error codes residing in the cars computer.
