Won't start - intermitant - strange
Twice this week my wife's Elantra ('05 I think) wouldn't start. Both times itwas shortly after driving a few miles to the store. When turning the ignition you could hear the starter crank but there was also clicking and a chime like noise from the left side under the hood. I have never heard this chime before, it was weird.
So the car will start fine after sitting all night. But twice my wife has been stranded at the grocery store.
With a jump it starts right up. No need to let it charge for a couple minutes.
Any ideas?

RE: Won't start - intermitant - strange
The clinging you hear is the starter solanoid complaining that there is not enough current to energize the starter circuit. I am not surprized that the car runs well once started. If the alternator is in sound shape, the car will actually run without the battery in circuit once it has been started. Yes, you may need a new battery, but since it appears to be somewhat temperature sensitive, I suggest you start by cleaning, inspecting and tightening both battery cable connections. If the cables are corroded, replace them.
