Hyundai Elantra While not much larger than the accent, the Elantra offers similar room, but a sportier look and feel, as well as more power.

Default Elantra Trim Level Value Edition Cruise Control

I purchased a 2020 Hyundai Elantra Value Edition trim level sedan this summer. Generally I have been very happy with the vehicle and the vehicle performance except for one major issue. The cruise control on this vehicle does not operate like every other cruise I have ever used (note that this is a regular cruise control not the adaptive type). In normal operating mode when cruise is actuated the engine instantly over revs and remains at a higher rpm than the regular transmission schedule for the selected speed. I have demonstrated to the dealer where I purchased the vehicle this condition and they confirmed that Elantras of the same year and trim level they have in stock exhibit the same performance. It should be noted that in addition to excessive engine rpm's this also results in approximately a 10% reduction in fuel economy! If you want to confirm this for yourself, find a level road with little traffic and establish a steady speed at or above 40mph. Notice the engine rpm, select cruise and observe that engine rpm increases about 25%. At 55mph the vehicle cruises in 8th gear at 1500rpm, in cruise the transmission is forced into 6th gear and the rpm increases to 2000. The dealer connected me with Hyundai corporate customer relations to request that this condition be corrected. I have been contacted several times by corporate customer service representatives who have passed along my observations to management. The response has been that this is normal operation and they will not consider correcting this fault. They also have said they have only received one other complaint and without more customer comments no further action will be taken. As an engineer I noticed this situation immediately but other Elantra owners may not have even realized that they may be experiencing a 10% or more reduction in fuel economy when using their cruise control.

If you have a new 2020 Elantra Value Edition trim level or other models with the 2.0 liter engine you may be experiencing the same situation. If loosing 10% or more in fuel economy when using cruise is not acceptable please join me in complaining to Hyundai Consumer Affairs by calling 800-633-5151 and voicing your concerns. I believe this is a correctable condition but it is going to take more comments to Hyundai to force them to do an update.
