Default Oil light on - would you expect a code ?

Hi,

My 2007 CRTD 2.2 ltd for the last year has had very intermittant oil light, 90% off, 10% on

Oil light recently ON 90% & off 10%, does seem slightly better on longer journeys but no real pattern
Had service & MOT, they did not investigate!

sounds fine & runs fine, just figured a sensor or the light.
Oil level steady, never goes up or down.

to be honest if it is oil pump not sure worth repairing hence not too worried, don't want it to seize but having been such a great car but 115k could have a lot of life in it but £'s.
whilst only 3 or 4k miles in the year think it likely have died by now if was oil pressure, drive for 20+ minutes with the light on.

Just had another service & I ask to really investigate, check oil pressure etc then at least rules that out.

They are normally very good but on collection told it was on & off so quickly could not get a code, sensor switch not available.
turn out they did not test the pressure, not sure if easy to access & test but still rather annoyed.

Firstly, would you expect a code, current or historically if oil pressure was actually low.

I have a good tester myself & never got a code even when the light was on.

Could I get a sensor or even perhaps oil pressure gauge, it is accessible?
Seen a few pictures and cannot make out location, must be under the air filter but some models say really tucked away underneath.

Thanks I/A

Not a good idea to drive it with a warning lamp telling you something is wrong.
It could be only a tired oil pressure sending unit, but guessing doesn't do much. Best to have anybody that can do it check it with an actual oil pressure gauge.
Should be worth the charge to know if the pressure is fine or not. Because if not, can be on it's way to be getting a lot more expensive.

No codes are usually available for oil pressure problems, just warning lamp.

Thanks for your reply,

Just found out (feel stupid I should have double checked) that the light on the left, the one that has been coming on, is the oil level.

There is a red one on the bottom right of the dash that is NOT coming on, according to the manual I have managed to find, this is the oil pressure.

As on the dip stick the level is fine & never goes up or down, i.e. not losing any or gaining water/fluid from elsewhere in the engine I would think almost certainly a faulty sensor.

Still annoyed the garage did not actually do a pressure check when I asked but am thinking nothing really to worry about?

Or can the level light still indicate a problem, can I access the sensor for this easily or anything I can check?

I had the same issue with my 2007 Sante Fe a couple of years ago. The sensor just needed to be replaced, which is bit of a small challenge to access it, but you can. In addition to the light coming on/off, it also developed a small oil leak.
