So, our 2014 Santa Fe broke down the other day.....went into 'limp' mode and wouldn't go over about 10 mph. Had it towed to the dealer. Car is still under warranty. Dealer wants 160$ to clean the throttle body, they say that is the issue and that its not covered under warranty.

Anyone ever heard of this?

 

A dirty throttle body is a possible reason for that problem and that wouldn't be covered under the warranty.

 

So, guess that whole 'bumper to bumper' thing...isn't REALLY 'bumper to bumper'.

If the throttle body failed then it would be covered. Being dirty is not covered.

 

Limp home mode means the ECM saw an issue and/or lost contact with a sensor that could damage the engine or transmission.
And has powered down so you can get home without the car damaging itself.
Limp home mode is a condition set by the vehicle's ECM.

A dirty throttle body doesn't sound like it could damage very much
unless it was so bad that it cause other issues such are misfires and/or running extremely rich.
Sorry, but it sounds like the dealer is trying to cover it expenses at your expense
I would try telling the dealer that if a little dirt is going to make the ECM direct the car into limp home mode to prevent damage
that they should replace the defective throttle body. All under warranty of course.

I am sorry but to me ... it just sounds fishy when the dealer wants money to fix something on a car that is under warranty.
You know, "blame it on something which I can charge the customer instead of me paying for it", kind of thing
I could be wrong but I don't trust car dealerships.
