I examined the CV joint on the axle I removed. The boot is fine. All the grease came out from under the boot on the inner side. The band must have become loose. The rollers inside look fine. So I'm going to clean it out a bit, put fresh grease in it, reband it , and put it back in the car.

Does anyone have any knowledge / suggestions on which type of grease and how much?
I have to buy a banding tool and bands. Any suggestions there?

There is special CV Joint grease, make sure you ask for grease for CV Joints.
They have kits to replace a damaged boot . Clamps come with it. Don't know if clamps are available separately.
