timming chain?

The "new 2.7 v6 in the santafae" is the Delta V6 Hyundai has been using for the past 10 years when they stopped using Mitsubishi 3.0 liter V6 engines. As jsinton pointed out, the Delta has a timing belt that is replaced every 60K miles. Early Lambda 3.3/3.8 V6 engines had trouble with faulty chain tensioners (which made a racket on start up), but I've never heard of an outright chain failure associated with this problem. The 4 cylinder Theta II engine has been very solid, I don't think I have heard or read about one timing chain issue with it.

All warranties remain in effect for secondary owners of Hyundai cars, except for the 10 year/100K powertrain warranty. That coverage is reduced to 5 years/60K, same as the 5 year/60K bunmper-to-bumper warranty. I will forewarn you that warranty coverage is predicated on a history of proper maintenance. Some dealerships interpret this as all scheduled services be conducted by a Hyundai dealership, others are more flexible. My dealer doesn't mind me performing my own maintenance for oil changes, fluid checks and tire rotations, but is insisting I bring the car in the major milestone services scheduled at 30K intervals which involves a coolant flush, tranny flush and a few other major items. 30K would be a good time to ask about the timing chain tensioners. Also, you should ask the previous owner where they had the car serviced.
