Damaged engine swap - Performance?
My 2003 Tib ingested some water in one of those flash floods West Texas is famous for.....and the subsequent hydraulic lock-up bent a connecting rod. The insurance guys want the motor changed with one of like value. God knows what I'll get, but my question is this: in 2003 the Tib V-6 was making around 180 hp and has since been detuned by Hyundai to around 170 hp for the later models (probably for better mileage). If I ask the mechanics to keep the old computer chip in the replacement engine, will it have the same performance relative to tuning? Are the chips even compatible from year to year? I know a number of elements go into tuning, but I'm thinking the factory usually changes mixture and timing in the chip making it the major factor.
The big lesson here is the name Tiberon (shark) doesn't mean the car is water-friendly, so stay home when the roads flood. Feel free to observe a moment of silence for my soon-to-be rising insurance premiums.
Thanks all,
Dave
