2005 Hyundai Tuscon Subframe & under carraige rot
My daughter purchased a new 2005 model year Hyundai Tuscon. She passed suddenly last month and I promised my 14 year old Granddaughter i would have her Mom's car Pa. Inspected and returned to Harrisburg PA where she resides.
Unfortunately I was told by inspection mechanic that the car failed inspection due to severe rust where the Drivers side rear subframe bolts to the body. I took pictures after checking around for several weeks found a shop to repair the car. After checking the car and diagnosing the problem yesterday, I was told the subframe is also rusted out and wold also need replacement. estimate of over $2500.00. OTHER THEN THAT, the car is in good shape with slightly less than 100,000 miles. I was told this is a common problem and subject to possible recall.. Are there any options other then junking the car or spending $3000 on a repair.

Other options are:
Waiting for a recall. In any case, please report the situation to "safercar.gov". The more reports the more likely the recall will happen.
Lower the repair expense by getting a subframe from a southern junk yard. Look at Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market
Keep all records of expenditures etc. You may be entitled to reimbursement if a recall occurs later. Your risk though. Also create a paper trail with Hyundai.
Look for a less expensive place to repair your car. Comparison shopping pays here.
I'd consider giving it to a Community College for their body shop program. After all you have almost 2 years until she gets her license.
