Check engine light
I am the original owner of a 2012 Elantra GLS. I went to a dealership a few months ago for recall related repairs. A few days ago the Check Engine Light in my car went on. I went to a garage. They reset the system and asked me to wait and see if the light still comes on. It did come on again yesterday.
Are there any common issues related to the 2012 Elantra? Any suggestions on why the check engine light would go on.

One of the main reasons the check engine lamp comes on is because the engine is not running well and is emitting more than the accepted amount of pollutants.
Some other reasons could be certain systems run a system check as soon as the key is turned on or the vehicle just started.
The check engine lamp will also comes on if a fault has been detected that could cause damage to vehicle components and send the vehicle into what is called Limp Mode.
In that mode performance is reduced to insure the operator has the vehicle checked out . It permits the vehicle to be driven to a repair facility.
Some faults will reset when the engine is turned off, but will illuminate the lamp as soon as the fault reoccurs.
Hope this long winded essay helped explain some of what goes on.

While resetting the system at the garage, the mechanic said there is no code from the system regarding the fault in the car. He said the light may have come by error and we could keep using the car.
However, the light came back in one hour of operating the car. One thing I noticed was steering is not very smooth like before. I do not know if the check engine light came on because of this. Did anyone come across the check engine light because of the steering not being smooth?

If it is one of those faults that resets every time you shutdown the engine, that was probably why the shop could not find any codes.
What you need to do , if possible , when you take it to be checked for codes after the lamp comes on again, take the vehicle to a shop, but DO NOT SHUT THE engine off, leave it running . That way the code will remain so the shop can check it. Make sure they don't shut it off either until the code is retrieved. There will most likely be a code pertaining to the steering system.
