Default Indicator clicking continuously

Hi All,

After suggestions if anyone can help.

I have a 2011 hyundai I10 1.2

A couple of days ago my indicator began continuously clicking even when indicator not in use, this started as continuing to click after being diactivated for a short time/intermittently to now continuously clicking as soon as the key is in the ignition.

Have tried cleaning out indicator stalk. Checked fuses and all fine.
Also checked relays however annoyingly there is no diagram to show which relay is which on the fuse/relay box inside the car under the steering wheel it only shows the fuses not the relays.

If anyone has knowledge on which relay is which in this part of the car that would be very helpful for future reference.
We did find the flasher relay in the end but not convinced this is what's causing the issue.

Any help/suggestions much appreciated.

From a few years experience, (some bad ones too) different sounds of clicking come from different causes, Flashers produce one kind of sound ,while not operating correctly relays, can produce a completely different clicking or other sound.
Anyway,,,,,,,,,, if you have the owner's manual for your vehicle , it should show the fuse and relay panel and what each fuse protects and it's and any relays location in the diagram..

There are also circuit breakers in some panels and if there is an excessive current draw the circuit breaker will open and close at different rates depending on how much over the limit the short/, drain is pulling. That also produces a clicking sound.

Hope I didn't confuse you,,,,,,,,,,too much !

Thank you kindly for your response.

I have had a bit more of a 'play' today, taking off the covers around the steering column to get to the indicator stalk.
I think it may be a dodgy connection in the indicator stalk as when you slightly move round the connection that plugs in to the indicator stalk the sound stops but move it a little more and it starts again. Tried cleaning this all up in case some dust or whatever had got in to the connection points. The 'clicking' did stop for a short time, then became intermittent again and now constant again.
I may have to try a new indicator stalk.

The clicking makes the normal 'clicking' sound in time with the indicator when the indicator is functioning but then becomes rapid 'clicking' when the indicator is not in use. At first I wondered if it was a bulb going as older cars I've had do this rapid 'clicking' when a bulb has gone when the indicator has been in use.

As you said regarding the fuse and relays, majority are listed in the manual and there is a diagram on the cover for both the fuse/relay box in the engine compartment and near the steering wheel however for some reason the relays are missed off the one near the steering wheel which we found really unusual and I've tried searching online to no avail.

From what you have described , I believe you are in the ball park with the sig sw. When they fail , they produce all kinds of unexplained things.

The better way to determine just what is happening would be to start tracing the wiring and see just where it goes.
Something like this might best be left to someone with some automotive electrical experience, it most likely would save a lot of time and money.

I did end up purchasing a second hand indicator stalk and replacing it. However when I removed the old one I found a lot of lubricant inside the unit and this was causing some kind of 'short' and you could smell a kind of burnt smell inside the unit, when I cleaned out the excess lubricant, just leaving a small amount where needed, I put it back together and back in the car and it worked fine.

Hope this helps.

A little FYI,

The signal light lever rotates a type printed circuit under the steering wheel in the steering column.
To access this section for any type maintenance, the steering wheel has to be removed .
To do this requires a special steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel and gain access.
If there is any kind of problem with the signal light switch assy , just replace it. There is a series of wires that come from the signal sw assy that usually go down the column to a plug. Not all vehicles are the same, some assys can be changed just removing a few screws and switching parts.
It does sound like a wire is chaffing against a possible ground, but not actually hearing the sound it could be something going on with the sw assy.
Something you might try, remove the flasher and see what you get. If the problem goes away it is confined to the signal system . If not, there is something going on that will require addl checking to isolate the problem.
