Wow, I did my first engine job over 60 years ago - learn something every day! very useful to know and I'll remember to try that when the problem re-occurs.
Thing is there are 3 feeds off the +ve terminal. I am not sure where the 3rd one goes but I cannot see how it would completely kill the system (clock also) unless there was a complete break! So I am still thinking Ground cable or battery. So I will change the cable and battery if (when) it happens again.
In the meantime I think it would be useful to fix the radio and also get some experience getting at the wiring behind the dash (ignition, etc.) any idea how to get the centre panel (radio) off?
